On 1/27/51 the US started nuclear bomb testing in Nevada 65 miles
north of Las Vegas..here's the M65 Atomic Cannon named "ATOMIC ANNIE" and this is the first and only nuclear shell to ever be fired from a cannon. It had a range of seven miles. I know this ain't got much to do with the STOOGES but I just think this is some crazy shit...the ultimate DEATH TRIP.

SICK OF YOU

 ...at some point David Robert Jones and James Newell Osterberg had a falling out..or maybe over TIME they just grew apart ( "the door to dreams was closed..") Here's hoping BOWIE & IGGY have at least one more artistic collaboration together ( "we should be on by now..")..if not, let's hope Dave and Jim can at least reclaim at some point that Berlin state of mind and have a few more 'lachens'...if just for one day..

BOWIE VS. POP!

From a 2006 cartoon by the Venture Bros. called "Showdown at Cremation Creek Pt. 1 in which BOWIE battles to the death against the tag team of IGGY POP and KLAUS NOMI! At one point IGGY says to DAVID: "I'm sick of being your IDIOT!" ENO famously said that few people liked the VELVET UNDERGROUND but every one of them started a band...few people liked the STOOGES but everyone of them that didn't OD young became somekinda artist..or at least started a blog...

January 8 is also DAVID BOWIE'S Birthday..we all know the Ballad of David and James so I'll just make this seven days of IGGY/BOWIE so we can be HEROES..just for one week...  

ALL THE WAY TO MEMPHIS...

January 8 was ELVIS'S Birthday..THE ORIGINAL ROCK N'ROLL frontman...IGGY'S "LUST FOR LIFE" LP was racing up the charts until THE KING died..RCA switched all their record manufacturing plants to making ELVIS records to keep up with the demand...IGGYS sales never recovered. On Oct. 8, 1994 the IG performed at an ELVIS tribute concert, singing
"RIP IT UP."

This Sunday is SOUPY SALES B-Day! IGGY is quoted as saying that the songs on the STOOGES first two LP's had so few words to them because as a kid he heard SOUPY say on his TV show that kids should send him letters with " 25 words or less." Soupy's two son's Tony and Hunt also played bass and drums with IGGY early in the IG's solo career.

Happy B-Day to CHRIS STEIN!..BLONDIE opened for IGGY on his first solo tour. I hung out with Blondie back at their hotel after their first LA show at the WHISKEY A' GO GO..I'm sure they've forgotten but I'll probably be telling people about it until I take my final Death Trip...BTW, Blondie's song "Detroit 442" is named after IGGY'S hotel room number!

LITTLE DOLL'S 1ST CHRISTMAS! IGGY & the STOOGES Palladium show was the first night my lovely wife AMANDA & I got a babysitter for our then 1 month old BABY GLORIA. If that seems a rather tenuous STOOGES connection then consider this: one of JAMES WILLIAMSON'S pre-STOOGES bands ( The
Coba Seas ) recorded a live version of "GLORIA" and IGGY himself would do "GLORIA" live solo and with verious post-STOOGES bands!

PATTI SMITH...surrounded by...stooges...stooges..Today ( 12/30) is Patti's birthday..like the STOOGES & RAW POWER her shows at the Roxy in L.A. back in 1976 helped renew the true ROCK N'ROLL spirit that was missing for so much of the seventies. We were at the 1/30/76 Roxy show when IGGY jumped on stage ( as heard on the "Teenage Perversity and Ships in the Night" bootleg...that's Brother Doug yelling 'hey Whittier!'). Patti spoke for us all when she said " WE CREATED IT...LET'S TAKE IT OVER!"

"50,000 WATTS OF POWER":As an addendum to this week's MIKE WATT birthday post : Our friend,poet and all around provocateur JASON LYNN ( aka JASON THE TERRIBLE ), had no ickets for the Palladium gig. So he brought one of his paintings to the show, hoping somehow to get it to IGGY. He ran into WATT, who not only took the painting to the IG but made sure both JT and his mate got into the concert. He also called Jason a "genuine person" and kissed him on the cheek!

When James wrote "TIGHT PANTS" I figured he was writing about some LITTLE DOLL, not his stage outfit! ( I just realized, this is my third "Little Doll' reference of the week!).

N'ROLL for me back in the dark ages of the mid-70's...another cool

GUITARS FULL OF SOUL..our man JAMES WILLIAMSON hanging out with guitar wizard JEFF BECK, who's work with the mighty YARDBIRDS was a great influence on The STOOGES ( compare the intros of the Yardbirds' cover of MOSE ALLISON'S "I'm Not Talking" with "I've Got a Right" or the main
riff of "Happenings 10 Years Time Ago" with "I'm Sick of You")...Jeff, I know YOU'RE A BETTER MAN THAN I but anytime you wanna flush that fusion and get your FUZZBOX cookin' again is fine with me...

ROLL OVER BEETHOVEN..on this day in 1792 Beethoven had his first music lesson...here's a shot of IGGY in BERLIN working on THE IDIOT, an album that was to Post-Punk what RAW POWER was to Punk.    " LASS' SIE NACH BERLIN KOMMEN!"

On this day in 1941 GERMANY declared war on the USA...here Mr. Osterberg goose steps passed Ron, who is in full Nazi regalia. I've always wondered what Ron's parents thought of his obsession..perhaps they realized there was nothing political about it..the KRAUTS have always made cool looking gear..

BROTHER WAYNE KRAMER and IGGY both FEELIN' IT...although I'm not sure they're feelin' the same thing..today Brother Wayne announced on FB that
, like James Williamson , he's been honored with his very own ROCK N'ROLL GUITAR GOD BOBBLEHEAD, which somehow seems more ROCK N"ROLL than Rolling Stone magazine's 100 Greatest Guitarists or the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame , the later of which will never let the MC 5 enter their
hollow halls...

UNDER THE INFLUENCE...IGGY wears one of his influences on his sleeve(shirt)..today is Jim Morrison's Birthday..also the day both Darby Crash and John Lennon split..can you IMAGINE if James Osterberg,like Jimbo,left us in 1971?...no RAW POWER..no THE IDIOT..no PUNK ROCK..NO FUN.

In December 2007 Madonna was named an inductee to the Rock and Roll Hall  of Fame..instead of performing herself at the induction ceremony fellow Michiganite Madonna had The Stooges play her hits "Burning Up" and "Ray of Light."  Three years later The Stooges returned to the SCENE OF THE CRIME as inductees themselves..unfortunately without RON who, as IGGY
noted , was probably hanging out with BRIAN JONES up in heaven, flicking cigarette ashes down on us all...

acts....bassist SHEMP "Lamebrain" HOWARD had to sit out this leg of the tour because of repeated blows to the head...
